Why a Bit of Delusion Might Be Exactly What You Need
You have to be a little delusional to chase a dream.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith once shared an unexpected insight: you have to be a little delusional to chase a dream. Not reckless. Not detached from reality. But just unreasonable enough to keep believing in your vision—especially when no one else sees it yet.
That small dose of unreasonableness? It’s the fuel that gets screenplays written, businesses launched, movements built, and teams inspired. Without it, we often talk ourselves out of things before we even begin. We wait for proof, permission, or perfect timing—none of which ever really come.
In my coaching work, I’ve seen this play out again and again. The boldest leaders I’ve worked with weren’t always the smartest in the room—but they were the most unreasonable about what was possible. They refused to shrink their vision to fit the current reality. Instead, they expanded the reality around them to match their vision.
They saw opportunity in places others overlooked. They asked “Why not?” when others said “That’s impossible.” And they took action even when the outcome wasn’t guaranteed—because deep down, they believed they could shape it.
So here’s your midweek reminder:
Let your ambition be just unreasonable enough to scare you a little.
Because that’s where growth lives. That’s where leadership begins. That’s where the fun starts.
And if you’re ready for coaching that helps you stretch—strategically, courageously, and with your feet still on the ground—Let's talk.
